Selecting Your Summer Vacation Destination

Have you and your family made the decision to plan a summer vacation this year? If you have, you are not alone. Each year, a large number of families decide to vacation in the summer months. If you have already selected your summer vacation destination, you are one step ahead of most families. If you have yet to choose a vacation destination, you will have to do so.

Planning a summer vacation can be an easy task, but at the same time it can be difficult. It all depends on what you need and want to get out of your summer vacation. The first step in planning your summer vacation is not necessarily to choose a destination, but to choose a scenery. Would you like to go camping in the woods, sailing on the water, or be relaxing at the beach? The things that you want to do on your vacation are vital to the selecting the perfect summer vacation destination.

Does riding a rollercoaster, sailing on the water, or relaxing at the beach all sound exciting? If each of these activities offers you excitement, you may have a difficult time narrowing down your search to just one destination. To decide on the perfect vacation destination, you are encouraged to research a number of popular vacation ?hotspots.?

Information and travel brochures can easily be found or ordered online. Brochures can be ordered from most large cities and popular vacation destinations in the United States or overseas. A large number of these brochures are free and are filled with valuable information. If you want to take the time to research a number of popular summer vacation destinations, you are encouraged to request these brochures well in advance.

Researching a collection of summer vacation destinations is a great way to plan your own vacation; however, it can become a long and difficult process. This process becomes even more difficult if you searching for a unique vacation destination. To save time and money, you may want to consider researching the most popular destinations in the United States.

It is likely that you already know a number of popular summer vacation destinations off the top of your head. You are encouraged to perform a standard internet search on each of these destinations. You may also want to order a number of travel brochures. It is important to remember that it may take a few weeks for your travel packets to arrive.

As previously mentioned, it is likely that you may know of a number of popular vacation destinations. If you are only able to remember a limited number of locations, you may want to rely on suggestions from others. These suggestions should be closely examined before booking a vacation. You never know what vacation ideas you could get just by speaking to friend, family member, or co-worker.

If you and your family are interested in a simple vacation, you could vacation at an amusement park. There are a large number of amusement parks located all across the United States. You could visit a local amusement park or you could travel across the country to find one; your options are literally unlimited. Some of the well-known amusement parks in the United States include Six Flags, Bush Gardens, and Sea World.

If a vacation on a beach is more your style, you have a number of options to choose from. There are a large number of beaches located along the Untied States coasts and overseas. It is also important to note that beach vacations do not have to be limited to the coast. There are a number of popular beach resorts located inland too. These inland resorts are often located on large lakes. Popular beaches that you may recognize include Myrtle Beach, Daytona Beach, South Beach, Panama City Beach, and Santa Barbara Beach.

It is easy to see that you have an unlimited number of options when it comes to choosing a summer vacation destination. Taking the time to seriously consider each destination may result in the vacation of your dreams.

What to Give? Great Corporate Gift Ideas

Golden Gate Park offers more than just a Play Date

With its moderate temperatures year round, San Francisco is one of the best cities in the world in which to go outside and play. No matter what time of year it is, there is probably something you can find to do outside that is a lot of fun. Even if it is just “Singing in the Rain”. Beyond singing of course, there are plenty of activities that are best enjoyed out of doors. And there are few places in the world better to enjoy these outdoor activities than Golden Gate Park.

If you like wheels, there are plenty of places in the park where you can either rent biking and skating equipment. Of course if you plan on skating, it is quite easy to bring your own equipment along on your vacation. If you have children and are looking for fun activities that you can enjoy together, these are among the top on my list. Of course there are several more that you will find at Golden Gate Park as well.

I can keep my kids occupied for hours with one little Frisbee tossed between the three of them. And there are plenty of open spaces in this great park where Frisbee tossing is quite possible. In addition to Frisbee there are several other outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by you or your family.

There is an archery field and a shop where you can rent all the equipment you will need. In addition to equipment, which can be purchased or rented, you can also buy lessons for that equipment as well. If this is something you’ve never tried before, you should at least stop by and take a look. I think it’s a great sport that is incredibly fun for young and old alike. It’s also something that isn’t as commonly found as it should be so may actually be a real treat for your children.

If you love the water as I do, you will be delighted to find that in addition to beaches which offer surfing and sea animal watching, there is a huge lake in the park which offers paddleboat and row boat rentals. This is good fun and clean living if you ask me. Of course, I’m a water baby so I’m a little biased.

If water isn’t your thing, have you ever tried swing dancing? If not, it’s time you considered Lindy in the Park. Every Sunday, weather permitting, there is swing dancing from 11:00 am -2:00 pm with free lessons offered at 12:30 pm. Young and old children alike get a real thrill out of this and it’s a great way to trick yourself into exercising. Lindy in the Park is completely free and a lot of fun. If you are planning to include a trip to Golden Gate Park in your San Francisco visit, I strongly urge you to plan it for Sunday and plan to attend Lindy in the Park.

In addition to these activities there are handball tables both indoors and outdoors that can be used for a quick game. If this is something that you find interesting you might want to stake out a spot close by because there are only a few tables and a great deal of interest. Other interesting activities in Golden Gate Park include lawn bowling, tennis, dog runs, basketball, and disc golf. .

If all of that isn’t enough there are several other sites and activities available throughout the park that should spark your interest. Among those is a favorite for young and old children alike–The 1912 Herschel-Spillman carousel. This is very popular among children and seconded closely by the nearby playground. If you think about it, a day at Golden Gate Park isn’t your typical day at the park. With so much to do and see, it is hard to imagine that a day at this park isn’t a vacation in and of itself.

If you?re looking for a ring ding for your front door, you?ll have plenty of options on different sound effects. No longer do you have to settle for a simple bell tone of ding, but there are great doorbell sounds that include chimes and a lot more. Know the different types, and the whimsical or elegant tones you can purchase, so you?ll be happy to answer your front door.

Most people don?t realize it but the sound of the doorbell?s tone can affect your mood. If you?re unhappy with the boring or screeching sound of yours, you can change it. Some people say their sounds from the front door sound like nails being dragged across a chalkboard. If that?s you, you should know that today?s technology provides you with options. While you?re at it, why not get a little creative, and purchase one with a little musical flare of doorbell sounds.

The various models include those that are wired with door chimes, and just plain ole sounds, like a ding dong. Of course if you really want to go fancy, you can buy one that uses infrared technology, or just go low tech and stick with a wired one. Both types have the options of chimes or bells. Some doorbell sounds run on batteries and are plug in to the wall. Quality sound systems will have a low battery indicator button. Other types of doorbells have to be hardwired into your electrical circuits.

Many can be electronically or manually set for volume control. When setting your doorbell sounds, make sure that all in the house can hear that decibel level. It?s also a great idea if you?re buying for someone else as a gift, to take them along too. People have different hearing levels, and you don?t want to purchase one that won?t work for them. Also, make sure that doorbell sounds can be seen by a light indicating ringing or chiming is on the unit you purchase.

Before you purchase a new unit for your door, check out what types of special sounds that you might like. Doorbell sounds come in more than a ding or chime; you can get some that celebrate just about any occasion. Holiday sounds with the 12 Days of Christmas song is nice. If you?re a sports fan use the song Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Don?t think your choice of sounds end there with your doorbell sounds. You can get the happy birthday song or even Dixie if you want to.

Backyard Activities for the Home Improvement Lover

When we think of backyard activities, sports often come to mind. While sports are a great way to spend your time outdoors, they are not all that backyard activities include. In fact, while you may not necessarily think so, backyard activities also involve the completion of projects. If you are a home improvement lover, it is quite possible that your next backyard activity could involve the building or the remodeling of a structure.

In the United States, backyards are filled with millions of different things. Many homeowners have pools, barns, work sheds, or garages. If you already have these items inside your yard, you may want to think about remodeling them. Remodeling projects are ideal for those who wish to update or expand their backyard structures. Summer is the perfect time to complete many remodeling projects, especially those that are outside.

While many homeowners make the decision to remodel, there are others that choose to build. If you don?t have a barn, garage, or work shed, but you would like to have one, now would be the perfect time to start construction. In most areas of the United States, summer has the prefect weather conditions for many backyard projects.

The first step in building or remodeling a backyard structure is to develop a plan. If you already know what you would like to build and how you would like to build it, you are well on your way to a completed project. However, if you are unsure what you would like to build or how to build it, you may want to think about doing a little bit of research before you start your next home improvement project.

Perhaps, the easiest way to get ideas or directions on how to build a garage, work shed, or barn is to visit your local library or book store. In these locations, you should be able to find a number of books that will not only offer you suggestions, but give you directions on how to get started. Libraries are nice; however, you will only be able to keep the materials for a short period of time. If you are interested in saving your resource guides for another project, you may want to consider purchasing your own books.

Once you have decided on a structural design, you will need to obtain the necessary building supplies. The supplies that you need will all depend on what you are building or remodeling. Despite the fact that different projects will require different supplies, there are some supplies that are common among all backyard building or remodeling projects. These supplies may include wood, metal, saws, and many other common household tools.

As previously mentioned, summer is ideal for most construction projects. Even though the weather will most likely be cooperative, it may still be a good idea to check your local weather forecast. If you are doing a project that requires perfect weather, such as roofing or painting, you will want to plan your project around the projected weather forecast. With projects that require more than one days worth of work, you may want to wait until the weather forecast predicts steady weather. This will prevent you from having to stop your building or remodeling and then startup again later.

Although building and remodeling projects are great backyard activities, not everyone is able to do them. If you are inexperienced in construction, you may find it difficult or impossible to do the work yourself. If this is the case, professional assistance may be just what you need. Completing your own home improvement projects will save you money, but only if you know what you are doing. Poor building or remodeling jobs may not only need additional, costly repairs, but they may also be unsafe.

With something as large and important as most home improvement projects, you are advised against taking any unnecessary chances or risks. Whether you make the decision to perform your own home improvement project or sit back and watch a professional do it, you will still be outside, enjoying everything that your backyard and the beautiful weather has to offer.

5 Free Things to do while Visiting San Francisco

Anyone who knows me well knows that I like cheap and free things to do with the family. It isn’t that I’m not willing to pay good money for good fun, I just happen to believe that the best fun is sometimes as free as the wind. The same holds true when visiting new cities like San Francisco. I will invest a great amount of time looking for activities that me and other members of my family can enjoy for little or no money. This saves money for other things like good food and souvenirs.

I’m also a big fan of David Letterman and in that spirit I decided to devise a top five list of my very own in honor of Mr. Letterman’s Top 10 list. My big 5 list consists of things to do for free when visiting San Francisco.

1) Golden Gate Bridge. This is a favorite among tourists for many reasons. One of those reasons is the fact that it is one landmark that belongs only to San Francisco. It is uniquely a part of this city and represents, for many, your entire trip. Another reason is that there are so many ways to get there. I recommend walking and if you’re up for it, try one of the guided walking tours-this will provide valuable background information about the bridge as well as insuring that you don’t get lost on the way.
2) Golden Gate Park. This park is larger than New York’s Central Park and in my opinion equally grand. There is so much to do and see in Golden Gate Park that you could spend a good portion of your vacation here alone.
3) Cable Car Museum. Kids of all ages will find this museum interesting, especially big and little boys. This museum definitely offers a great deal of education and excitement for the family. In addition to learning about these neat cable cars which have become a trademark of San Francisco transportation. This is one museum I would pay to go to, the fact that it is free is a bonus that I can’t resist and the primary reason it is on this particular top ten list.
4) Walking Tours of San Francisco. These free walking tours are not only entertaining; they are also very informative as well. Learn about the history of the neighborhoods that this city is famous for as well as the great people who rebuilt a grand city, literally from the ashes of what it once was and made it even better. San Francisco has a wonderful story to tell and these guides narrate it wonderfully.
5) San Francisco Fire Department Museum. For the big kid in all of us that wanted to grow up to be a fire fighter, this museum takes the cake. Not only does it provide great historical references and artifacts but it is also really cool! I can think of no greater compliment to give a museum than that. This one, even your children will enjoy and beg to go back again and again.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or just a kid at heart these activities are a great and inexpensive way to pass a day or two while on vacation. If you can’t stand the thought of saving money or not spending it, I’m sure each of these places will be glad to accept donations or at the very least sell you something at the gift shop (if the place you are visiting has one). Regardless, I hope my suggestions have gotten your mental wheels turning and you are coming up with your own great ways to enjoy the day without spending a lot of green.

California Zoos

California is a state that is known for the nice weather for almost all of the year. That makes it possible for people to enjoy outdoor activities on a regular basis. Many families that live in the state of California have annual passes to the various zoos. They get to go see the animals all they want for a discounted price. Since so many tourists come to California, many of these zoos are popular attractions for them as well.

The most popular zoo in all of California is located in San Diego. It is one of the biggest and best zoos in all of the world. There are more than 4,000 animals there and you will be quite impressed with how everything is displayed. Make sure you plan a full day to discover all of it as it sits on 10,000 acres of land. There is a guided tour you can take on a double decker bus or you can choose to leisurely walk around the zoo on your own.

The Los Angeles zoo isn?t nearly as large but it has plenty to offer anyway. There are more than 1,200 animals here and they have amazing habitats set up for them. This is the location where the breeding program for the condor has been taking place. It has been very successful when you consider there were less than 25 condors out there a couple of decades ago. Now there are hundreds of them living happily in the environment.

The Los Angeles zoo continues to do what they can to expand and offer better exhibits. As funding is available they are able to upgrade current projects. The newest additions were completed in 2007. They included a new gorilla habitat and a tropical rainforest. By the end of 2009 the plan to have a new exhibit in place for the elephants.

The internet is the best place to find out about all of the different zoos available in California. You can plan your trip once you find out the hours they are open and you can get directions. Make sure you take the time to look around for coupons as well so you can save some money as well. Some of the largest and best zoos are found in California so if you enjoy this type of activity you really don?t want to pass up the opportunity to see what is out there.

Unique Christmas Gift

If you are tired of getting the same gift each year for your wife, husband, boss, or friend, you are probably looking for places to find a unique Christmas gift. These aren?t as hard to come by as you may think, but you will have to put some thought in to it. When I look for a unique Christmas gift for someone special, I have to stop and think about that person, and then start my search from there.

Each person is unique, so if you think of what makes them tick, and what they love to do, finding a unique Christmas gift is not as hard as you may think. Many times, it is just a matter of finding something you know they don?t have, and then looking for the unusual. If you know a golfer, but can?t imagine buying them clubs, a unique Christmas gift for that person might be a golf bag in their favorite color that is monogrammed with their initials.

You might also consider their personal interests when looking for a unique Christmas gift. If you know someone who is really into Elvis, look on eBay for a collector?s item that is in your price range. You might find the cook in your family a book from their favorite chef, and see if you can get it autographed for them. This might not be possible, but some people will autograph stuff if you mail it in and provide a post-paid return envelope or box.

Gift baskets can also be a unique Christmas gift. The best thing about gift baskets is that they are easy to make on your own, and you can fill it with whatever your friend or spouse loves. No two personally created gift baskets will be the same, and these are often popular yet unique Christmas gift ideas. They aren?t just good for Christmas either; they can be a great gift any time of the year and for any occasion.

If you really want something off the wall and totally out of the ordinary, take your search for a unique Christmas gift online. There are things available online that you may have never imagined, and things that are sure to turn someone?s head. These sites are often found using search terms like ?unique?, ?strange?, or ?weird?, along with the word ?gift?. You never know what kind of unique Christmas gift you might turn up.

Nominated for 6 Golden Globes and 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Aviator wows audiences with its breadth of scenery and vivid realism. Director Martin Scorsese, known for a host of excellent films such as Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995), and Gangs Of New York (2002) – not to mention the highly controversial The Last Temptation Of Christ (1988) – by no doubt turns out his best work since Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) sought to become a made man. The Aviator springs to life with nostalgic settings and a lavish tapestry of color and form, evoking all the enthusiasm indicative of Howard Hughes’ unique lust for life. John Logan, known for such films as The Last Samurai (2003) and Gladiator (2000), presents a screenplay that provides some insight into the enigmatic Hughes and captures the mannerisms of those who shared that life with him. In short, the film is a masterpiece of visual imagery and first-rate cinematography few movie lovers can afford to miss?

The Aviator focuses on the early life (1930-1947) of America’s most eccentric and bewildering billionaire playboy, Howard Hughes. Know for his seemingly erratic business dealings and fearless sense of adventure, Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) turned a small inherited fortune into an enormous corporate empire. And along the way, he captured the imagination of those around him with an attitude that embraced risk and life itself. Inheriting a majority interest in the Hughes Tool Company (founded by his father), Hughes embarks on a career in Hollywood where he produces a number of notable films including Hell’s Angels, The Front Page, and Scarface. Hughes’ obsessive dedication to perfection makes his stock rise in Hollywood and even helps launch the career of Jean Harlow?

But Howard Hughes is not just a one-trick pony, and his interest soon turns to the flourishing aviation industry where he becomes an integral part of TWA and pilots his own planes on a regular basis. His driving energy would lead Hughes to enter the defense industry, the electronics industry, Las Vegas casinos, and numerous other activities in the years ahead. But along the way, he deals with a cast of characters colorful in their own right. Romances with Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) provide insight into Hughes’ personal life, while Noah Dietrich (John C. Reilly), Hughes’ assistant and right-hand man, sacrifices much in his own life to enable Hughes to live out his latest visions and inspirations. When Hughes makes the bold move of constructing the Spruce Goose – the largest airplane ever built (and able to land on water no less) – Senator Ralph Owen Brewster (Alan Alda) accuses the billionaire of war-profiteering. Hughes takes on the Senator full-force and with all the zest that marked his previous ventures. Vowing that the Spruce Goose will fly, in the face of highly publicized claims that it will not, Hughes proves his critics wrong, and the Spruce Goose rises to the occasion?

Despite its loss to Million Dollar Baby at the Oscars, The Aviator can take pride in being nominated as one of the best films of the year (along with Finding Neverland, Ray, and Sideways). And the film is certainly deserving of that high honor. Few films better illustrate the beauty of America, or more importantly, the mountains that can be moved when a single individual lives his life with ambition, drive, inspiration, and a naked enthusiasm for all that life has to offer. Overall, The Aviator is among the best films of the past several years, and movie aficionados would be well-advised to watch every last minute with same enthusiasm of a young Howard Hughes?

?Gauging the Bridal Shower Guests – Running the Risk of Being Risqué

You are the maid or matron of honor, and it is up to you to throw a bridal shower for your very best friend. You have known her since the early days of kindergarten, and you have been inseparable for most of your childhood. You have laughed with her, wondered who liked her in high school, double dated with her, and were as stunned as she was when her beau proposed marriage. It was only natural that you would be the maid of honor, and you plan on sending her off to her new married life in style! You have been working with the bridesmaids and a time for the shower, a guest list, food, and a location have been nailed down. Now you are wondering about a theme for the party, and you are thinking lingerie – but you hesitate. How will Aunt Martha react to the display of negligees? How will the bride’s mother take to your notion of giving some very intimate apparel to her little girl, do you really want to rub it in that pretty soon her baby will belong to someone else in more ways than one?

Gauging the bridal shower guests is no easy feat, and since ideally there is only one bridal shower, it is important to think it through whether running the risk of being risqué is appropriate or maybe should be reserved for a girls’ night out.

Generally speaking, if the guest list for the bridal shower involves older people, especially the bride’s mother or other close female relative, keep the risqué gifts and games on the shelf. It is inappropriate in this setting and will not only embarrass the bride to be, but also make the experience a trial for the family members who will attempt to sit through what is akin to an insult to their little baby.

If children are present, or if it is possible that children could attend because you neglected to very clearly state on your invitations that the party is for “adults only,” do not run the risk of being risqué. Such behavior in front of children is not only inappropriate, but could also get you in a lot of trouble.

If the groom to be is present, even in the next room, it is not a good idea to have the girls display any behavior that may be considered risqué. This may quite possibly impede any serious interaction he may have in the future with his bride’s friends whom he might only remember as a gaggle of silly geese with a questionable sense of humor.

Another reason to eschew any risqué games or gifts is the bride’s disposition. If she is an active member of her church, turns bright red at certain TV programs, and overall is not in favor of any risqué behavior, it is not a good idea to force it upon her, even if you are doing it in jest or because you feel she needs to loosen up. This may drive a serious wedge between you and her, and thus should be avoided. You might want to run by her some of the ideas you have and see how she reacts.

On the other hand, if you and the bride are on the same wavelength and she enjoys being a little risqué now and again, then you might want to consider adding some spice to the party.

Obviously, there are no hard and fast rules as to how much is too much. While some guests may turn bright red at some risqué games, others might fade away with the exchange of lingerie. It is therefore a good idea to be risqué “in stages.” For example, start with a few silly games and see how the crowd does. If you notice that suddenly a few of them are pairing off and having conversations instead of participating in the games, it is a good indication that their threshold is reached. At that time it would be bad form to bring out the increasingly risqué entertainment that you have planned, and it would be best to just resort to the tried and true games that would make even the bride’s granny happy!
