Pediatric Nursing

Is your fascination with kids keeps you thinking about making a career out of it? Since you have soft spots for children, you are left with several options to choose from when it comes to deciding on what profession to land on. You can be a teacher, a day-care provider, or even a baby-sitter! But because there?s a desperate need for nurses due to the predicted shortage, you my want to reconsider your options and become a pediatric nurse. In pediatric nursing, you are given a chance to work with different children of different ages as well as promoting their health and well being.

To become a pediatric nurse, your educational preparation will require you to take up pediatric nursing program in order for you to gain the skills and knowledge needed to perform your job properly, which is providing care for infants, children and adolescents. Also, you should learn how to comfort and treat patients, assist doctors, examine and refer patients, and instruct parents to do their share of caring and giving support for their children. Do you now have a clearer picture of how important the role of a pediatric nurse in children and parent?s lives?

There are many programs that allow you to focus on caring for children with special needs or you can concentrate on a certain age group like infants or teenagers. The choice is yours to make whatever you prefer. You can also take courses in child development, diagnosis and treatment, and physiology. Or, you may take courses about health promotion, parenting, and disease prevention. If you are interested in healthcare systems and management skills, there are also available courses for you to take up on those areas.

What?s great about pediatric nursing is that you can become a pediatric nurse in as early as two years by completing a two-year master?s degree program offered by some nursing schools. And most of these programs allow you to become a practitioner nurse after graduation, which means you can examine, diagnose, and treat your own patients, while others let you become a clinical nurse specialist. But, if you already have a master?s degree in nursing, all you need to do is complete a postmaster?s degree program leading to certificate in pediatric nursing. Isn?t that a fast way to realizing your dream of having a career that involves children?

Having a degree in pediatric nursing allows you to work in schools, hospitals, clinic, or any other healthcare institutions. Due to the fact that there is a significant shortage of nurses, you?re guaranteed to get a job in no time, provided you have the credentials needed to take the position. Isn?t your fascination with children the reason why you want a career that has something to do with them? Well, this is your big chance and the best part of it is that there are lots of things you can do more than just working with them, you can as well show and provide children what pediatric nurses are known for ? care!

?Important Steps to Take in Becoming Licensed as an In-Home Childcare Provider

Becoming an in-home childcare provider is a wonderful step to take for the right individual! You will have the privilege of interacting with many children and the kids will enrich your life with their personalities, antics, and boundless love and affection that only children feel free to express so generously. Similarly, you will have a formative influence on them and are able to instill your values on their impressionable minds. Of course, there are some important steps to take in becoming licensed as an in-home childcare provider.

Before you can throw open your doors and invite parents to drop off their children, you will need to take some classes in infant and child first aid and CPR. This can usually be done by an afternoon spent with the Red Cross or another agency that offers the classes and will provide you with the adequate paperwork necessary to prove to your state agency that you have indeed taken this very important class.

Another class that a licensing agency will want you to take is one that deals with child development and childcare. While there are many options to choose from, it is important that you find out exactly which classes your licensing agency will accept. At times, they may even offer the classes themselves. While you may already know a lot of childcare and child development, it is not a bad idea to find out what current trends are. By the way, once you have obtained your license, you will need to keep it current by agreeing to attend annual training sessions with a set number of hours!

If you are planning to employ some helpers alongside you, they too will need to take the training.

You will need to fill out an application to be licensed. When the application is received, a representative of the licensing agency will make an appointment to take a look at your home. Since this will be your place of business, s/he will want to make sure that it is an adequate environment for the children. While it may appear a bit invasive, remember that it is done for a good cause, and that it is in your and the children’s best interest to be alert to problem areas. The agency representative will discuss with you which areas of the home are inadequate, what needs to be changed, rearranged, or simply moved out of reach. Did you know, for example, that there are a large number of houseplants that could be poisonous to children, and should be removed from any areas that the children will be playing in? Your local Fire Marshall may also send out a representative to ensure that your house is up to code, and has an adequate number of working fire extinguishers.

Renew your license every two years or as indicated.

There are certain other licensing requirements, depending on the kind of daycare you wish to run. For example, are you planning on running a daycare center that specializes in infants, or will you prefer to take children slightly older? Whatever you may decide, it is important to know that depending on the age group you are willing to take in, you may have to limit the number of older children – or younger children – that you can also accept. Additionally, there are certain number ratios that need to be observed – depending on the number of children you will accept; you may need to hire a helper.

Additionally, you and anyone else who will be in the home while the children are present will quite possibly have to submit to a drug test, criminal background check, and maybe even a mental health check.

Read and understand the rules of licensure and implement ways to comply with them.

As you can see, there is so much more to becoming licensed as an in-home daycare provider than simply opening up your doors and your arms. These are important steps that take some time and dedication, but the results are well worth it. Additionally, the license will permit you to reach a whole new clientele that is in search of a licensed setting rather than an unlicensed one. So go ahead and contact your licensing agency today!

Raise your hand if you don’t like kids. Okay, I’m sure there are a few adults out there who raised there hands, and of course an entire slew of teenagers. This is to be expected. Caring for small children is not a job for everyone. The truth is it’s better to avoid the reproduction aspect of life all together if you don’t want children. There’s not much worse than a dead-beat parent who despises their child. So if you don’t want one, take the necessary precautions to ensure that you don’t have one. Then there are the stellar individuals of our society that thrive off of a child’s joy. They live to see that youthful light in a toddler’s eyes as he/she discovers the world around us. This is an awesome thing. Some of these folks even go so far as to start a day care business of their own. Now that’s devotion.

My stepdaughter came to me a few months back with an idea for a career. She is now turning 20 and she wants to eventually start a day care business of her own. This shocked me at first. I didn’t even know that she liked small children. Naturally I advised her to think carefully about this. After all, does she really want to spend her days wiping mouths and assisting small children with their playing and learning routines? Hmm, this was something for her to really ponder. After hardly any time to think it out, my step-daughter had signed up for classes at the local community college. Child development classes that is. She was determined to pursue a career in daycare. On top of that, she found a job position with her aunt, who had already decided to start a day care business two years ago. I think the fact that hers was booming with business, had an effect on my step-daughter. Anyway, my step-daughter continues to take classes concerning this field and claims she’s interested in caring for children.

Be certain! Before you take it upon yourself to start a day care business, be SURE this is something you’re ready for. It’s not just about taking care of the little ones, but also about safety proofing your home/child care environment so that it suits infants and toddlers; having emergency numbers and plans in place, creating schedules and routines; and most of all, having endless patience. Get plenty of information on state laws and guidelines before you start a day care business.

The Role of Vitamins in Child Development
Nancy Dean

Every single bodily function depends on an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals in the bloodstream, including the growth process. Nutrition has a major influence on the quality and speed of cell growth, starting in the uterus and continuing into adulthood. Poor prenatal nutrition will not only retard the growth process, but may also lead to birth defects and other physical abnormalities.

The most important group of vitamins in terms of growth and development are the vitamins that make up the Vitamin B complex. The B complex is critical for normal growth in children, as well as many physical and mental bodily functions. One of the vitamins with the B complex, Vitamin B12, is especially important for normal growth in children due to its supply of cobalt. Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, is probably the most important of the B vitamins while the child is still inside the uterus. Folic acids are known to prevent birth defects and aids in the proper creation of the child’s DNA.

In order for a child to grow into a healthy body weight, the thyroid must function properly. The key mineral that aids in thyroid health and development is Zinc. Zinc deficiency is commonly seen in third world countries where diets are usually poor and the crops are grown in poor soil quality which is usually short on Zinc. Because of these factors, the percentage of retarded growth among children is unusually high. Depending on age and weight, children should be consuming between 10 and 15 mg of Zinc every day.

For a child’s bones to grow and develop into normal size and hardness, the most important vitamins and minerals, calcium, phosphorous, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, and magnesium, must all be present in sufficient quantity within the body. These vitamins and minerals all have properties that cause them to work as partners in regards to bone structure and density. Taken individually, they will not be as effective as they are when present as a group. Since the bones are continually losing calcium, sustaining the required levels of this group of vitamins and minerals is critical to proper growth.

Anyone with children can tell you that it is not always easy to fit all these nutritional requirements into their daily diet. Kids won’t always eat the healthiest foods, and won’t often eat everything you put in front of them. For this reason, dietary supplements may be an easier and more effective way to ensure that your child will grow properly. However, different children have different dietary needs, so always consult with your family doctor before starting your child on a nutritional supplement program.
About the Author

Title: Healing Anger and Violence in Our Society
Author: Margaret Paul, Ph.D.
E-mail: mailto:margaret@innerbonding.com
Copyright: ? 2003 by Margaret Paul
Web Address: www.innerbonding.com
Word Count: 642
Category: Emotional Healing/ Spiritual Growth

HEALING ANGER AND VIOLENCE IN OUR SOCIETY
By Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

I have counseled individuals, couples, families and business partners for the past 35 years and authored eight published books. All this experience has resulted in the development of a profound six-step healing process, called Inner Bonding, which anyone can learn and use throughout the day (FREE course available – see resource box).

The violence in Littleton, Colorado sparked many discussions regarding the cause of such horrifying behavior on the part of two teenage boys. I would like to address this in terms on Inner Bonding.

In my experience, it is not possible for us as human beings to be violent when we are connected to our true, core Self and to a source of spiritual guidance. When we do the work we need to do to develop a spiritually connected loving adult self, we have an inner adult who places limits on our behavior regarding harming ourselves and others.

However, it is very common in our society for people to lose touch with their true, core Self. Since our core Self holds our intrinsic feelings of compassion and empathy for others, losing touch with this aspect of ourselves may cause us to be able to harm others without feeling any pain or remorse over it. The question is, then, how do we lose our connection with our core Selves?

Many child development experts state that those people who disconnect from their empathy and compassion, generally do so between the ages of two and four. If our parents lacked empathy and compassion for our feelings and needs, we might have chosen to be caretakers and take care of their needs, or we might have chosen to become like them and not care about others’ feelings and needs. We may have had no role modeling for maintaining our own inner connection. If our parents shut themselves down to our pain and their own, we may have learned to shut down to our own and others vulnerable feelings. If, in addition, we were physically, sexually, emotionally or verbally abused or neglected, we may have shut down to survive.

Some children, whose parents were shut down or abusive, manage to stay connected with their core Selves through contact with animals such as dogs or horses, while others stay connected through contact with relatives or friends with whom they identify. But many young children just disconnect to survive. When in this disconnected state, if they watch violence on TV or practice violence through video games, they may further train themselves to numb out against compassion, empathy, and the pain of harming others.

Likewise, if children grow up with no personal connection with a source of spiritual guidance, they may not know that we are all one, and they may not consider the possibility that the consequences of their actions may follow them into their lives after death.

Without connection with their core Self and their spiritual guidance, they are left with only their wounded selves. If they happen to be operating from an enraged wounded self, this self can certainly act out in angry and violent ways. With no loving inner Adult to set limits, the harm to themselves or others can be disastrous, as we have seen.

While limiting guns is certainly a good thing to do, it will not stop the violence. This violence will not stop until we no longer need to learn, as very young children, to barricade our hearts. As parents and teachers we need to be practicing a healing process such as Inner Bonding so that we can reclaim our core Selves and our deep connection with God. Only by doing our own inner work will we be able to be the loving role models that our children need. The change in our society must come from within each of us.

The Truth about Karate for Kids – Part 4
Paul M. Jerard Jr.

Here are two more fantastic life skills your child can gain from
a kids Karate class.

Goal Setting

Any child, who starts to learn Karate, arrives to class with a
few goals in mind. These goals are as simple as learning a new
Karate technique, advancing to the next belt rank, and
impressing his or her parents. Once a short-term goal is
achieved, confidence settles in, and Karate training is a
succession of goals.

Therefore, overcoming obstacles, which routinely occur within
martial arts, become “second nature.” Children, who regularly
accomplish goals, within their Karate class, learn to accept
adversity, set-backs, and disappointments. Finding solutions
“under fire” is a routine part of a Karate classes for children.
This is extremely rewarding and builds a child’s self esteem to
the core of his or her inner being.

Anger Management

Karate class gives children an outlet for life’s daily stress.
Children today have too much stress with unstable family units,
bullies, peer pressure, and financial worries. The Karate studio
serves as a bridge between academic school and the family unit.
Children have a safe place to “vent” their frustrations, when
they come into a Karate class.

Many physical education programs, in schools, have been scaled
back – and playing out on the street is very unsafe. Karate is
safe, physical, and supervised. Kicking and punching bags, or
target pads, is just one way for children to get some
frustration out of their systems.

Children also learn to count and yell (kia) within the Karate
class at appropriate times. The kia is the sound you often hear
when a Karate practitioner demonstrates a breaking technique.
The ability to vocalize is an empowering experience for children
and a natural part of childhood.

Running, jumping, punching, kicking, and screaming are normal,
but children are often put on prescriptions for being active.
Karate gives children a safe and structured solution for
managing anger. Many parents, with children in our Karate
classes at our North Providence facility, remark that their
children sleep better, are more focused on homework, and are
more cooperative after a Karate lesson.

If we spent our childhood years with less physical activity,
more stress, and were told to be quiet all the time, we would
have anger management issues, as well. Extra energy is a part of
youth, and you can easily see this in any species. Youth is full
of energy, taking chances, and learning boundaries. This is why
“Karate for Kids” is so valuable in developing character within
our children today. There is no equal to Karate training, in
structure, or in child development.

Increase Brain Power

Everyone still wants to have an active mind when they are elderly and some parents even try to increase brain power in their children when they are still in the womb! Some child development experts believe that a fetus will grow into a more intelligent child if it hears Mozart being played. There is no scientific proof of this but it won’t do any harm. There is an obsession amongst some parents to force feed knowledge to their children. This hot housing, as it’s known, is done by showing flash cards to infants who can barely talk yet.

It’s a sad fact that we lose brain cells, as we get older. We start to notice it in little ways, such as going into a room and forgetting what we went in for. Remembering people’s names and appointments can also be problematic. There are some products on the market that make claims to increase brain power. They usually involve some sort of memory activity.

The medical establishment doesn’t really know why some people’s minds deteriorate at a faster rate than others but the consensus is that staying mentally active is very important. It shouldn’t be left until we retire either. Those gray cells need a work out when we are middle aged. Activities such as doing the crossword, sudoku and other puzzle games are all helpful. Games like chess and backgammon can also help to increase brain power. The brain is like any other muscle. It will shrivel with lack of use. Set yourself challenges. Learn a new skill such as a new language. Children are on hand to teach complex computer games to the young at heart.

Some people believe that diet is also an important factor and fish oil is recommended. A school in the UK recently conducted an experiment. They got permission from the parents to give fish oil tablets to the students. The teachers reported a remarkable improvement in the alertness and standard of work from those taking the tablets. That doesn’t explain why fish have a three minute memory! The brain can’t be expected to do its job if the body isn’t receiving the sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals. We are bound to be sluggish if we constantly fill ourselves with fast food. Exercise is important too if you want to increase brain power. Mind and body working together is the best way to keep the brain ticking.

With the ever-changing job market in the U.S. more and more parents find themselves facing the challenge of raising children in new towns and cities and away from their familial support system. It can be daunting being the new parent in town, especially when it seemed like you had just figured everything out where you used to live. While this may seem daunting, it is definitely not impossible and with these guidelines for helping you find quality childcare when you are new in town the transition can be both painless and smooth.

First, it is important that you understand that you may not be able to find exactly the same arrangement you had where you used to live. Accepting this will help you to have realistic expectations for childcare options in your new city or town. Often people make the mistake of assuming they will be able to find the same arrangement they had and when they don’t it can be very disappointing. Starting your search with a realistic outlook and an open mind can significantly reduce (or even eliminate entirely) common problems before they begin.

When you are new in town, the first thing you need to figure out is: where the other parents hang out. The best way to find out about quality childcare options for your family is, well, the same way you did it where you used to live, through networking with other parents. Other parents in your new community are your best resource when beginning your search for quality childcare. Go to public parks with your family on weekends. Join sports clubs, book clubs or any kind of club you might have an interest in. Joining groups is a great way to get to know the people in your new community. Take a volunteer opportunity in your new community. This is also a great way to meet people and get to know the fabric of your new city or town. The people in your community have been there longer than you and should be able to guide you to options and opportunities that you wouldn’t know about just by opening the phone book.

Get to know your new town or city geographically. All the research in the world won’t do any good if you are not quite sure where something is. Remember how great it was where you used to live? You could pick up the groceries and then swing by and pick up the kids all pretty much in a straight line before going home. Well, it can be that easy again, but getting to know your new surroundings is definitely a key. Drive around your new neighborhood and figure out where things are. Take the whole family and make it an adventure. Find areas that you like and are comfortable with and that are not too far from where you live or work.

Now you will want to narrow in on a childcare option that seems to work for you. Ask the sort of questions that will help you decide if this is the right option for you and your family. If it is a childcare center find out if you can drop in any time. Ask if you will have the opportunity to participate in program planning. Find out what the fees are and what those fees include. Ask if the caregivers are also trained in child development. If you have chosen home childcare, be sure to not only get references but also check them. Ask for professional and personal references. With your spouse write out a list of questions that you will want to ask or any concerns you might have to be presented at the interview. If you are unsure what questions to ask, the Internet is a great resource for finding printable interview question suggestions to take with you to the child care center or for your interview with the home care attendant.

Remember, finding quality childcare anywhere is a fine balance of being overly cautious and keeping an open mind. Sure, it may sound like those two approaches are at odds but really they are not. As you know by know, parenting involves balancing a lot of seeming contradictions. Keep your mind open to what is best for your child or children and be overly cautious in the search to find it.

Head Start programs are designed to help very young children of economically disadvantaged families thrive in the school setting. The services are offered to preschool children in an effort to help them get ready for their kindergarten and elementary school experiences.

The money collected for the developmental services for underprivileged preschoolers comes from grants. The Head Start programs fund agencies that provide the services to children in the community. The agencies are both non-profit and for-profit organizations that are equipped with the staff and supplies necessary to complete the mission of Head Start programs.

The main focus of the organizations is to help preschoolers develop math and reading skills very early. Through Head Start programs children of disadvantaged families have an opportunity to learn some of the fundamentals of reading and math before their educational careers even begin.

Children who get a good jump start in their reading and math skills experience more success than those who do not. Services for Head Start programs in some areas begin as early as birth depending on the family?s needs. The organizations recognize the importance of learning from a very young age.

While the notion of learning beginning at birth (and even before) is not really a new concept few other agencies and organizations have offered services provided by Head Start programs. Getting a real jump start on education can begin very early in life and the services offered are just the thing children from disadvantaged families need.

One of the most important aspects of the Head Start programs is family involvement. Parents are active participants in the planning and implementation of program services. Though the child typically goes to a building and attends preschool-type classes parents are still actively in the mix and they are encouraged to continue the interventions at home.

The little ones are not the only individuals who benefit from the learning experience. The Head Start programs are designed to help parents learn about child development as well as other aspects of bringing up a child. Topics include education, nutrition and social skills.

Head Start programs do include many social development activities that prepare little ones for appropriate interactions once they reach school age. Social skills should not be overlooked and these organizations help children work on their interactions with others.

It is never too soon to encourage your child to learn. Head start programs are fantastic tools to help children and families work together to live and learn.
