Beverley Brooke

Remember as with any weight loss and exercise program, moderation is the key! How fast you lose weight will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of weight you gained during your pregnancy.

Most women will lose anywhere from 10-14 pounds within the first 2 weeks of delivery. This weight may be attributed primarily to the loss of excess fluid in the body, the baby?s weight, the placenta and amniotic fluid. Some women might lose a little bit less, and others might lose a little bit more.

As the uterus shrinks back down to its normal size and your hormone levels continue to fall, you will lose weight. Most women gain at least 7 pounds of fat during pregnancy. This fat is meant to help women store energy while breastfeeding. How fast this weight comes off will depend on a number of factors including: genetics, your overall health, diet and exercise.

You should expect that it will take a little bit of time to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy. It did after all take you nine months to put that weight on! Many women have successfully lost weigh however, in just a few short months after a delivery. Some women will hang on to the last few pounds they have to lose until they stop breastfeeding. Your body may want to cling to a few extra pounds to ensure you have enough energy to provide adequate milk for the baby. Every woman?s experience is unique with respect to this.

The good news is that with a solid nutritional program and with moderate exercise, you can expect to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy within a reasonable time frame.

Most women will be back to their pre pregnancy weight within nine months of delivering IF they follow a regular exercise program and eat healthily after delivery. That said some women will lose their pregnancy weight in as little as six to twelve weeks!

Natural Remedies for Colic

Colic is a normal phase in the life of a baby during the first few weeks until the third or fourth month. Doctors believe that the excessive crying makes parents more aware of the responsibility of raising a child.

There is no miracle drug that can help treat colic babies. Parents will just have to face it until the child is able to adapt to the new environment and use some natural remedies along the way.

One of the simplest ones parents can use is music. This is probably the reason why lullabies were invented and those who don?t have a singing voice can get the same thing on compact disc. This should be placed whenever the infant is in the crib, which can help it, sleep comfortably.

Another natural remedy is the diet that the mother is having. Certain foods produce gas and when this is converted to milk, it is like passing on the same thing to the child. A dietitian can make a plan so this will not happen.

If the mother is no longer breastfeeding and is relying on milk concentrates, perhaps switching to soymilk instead of the regular kind can help the colic baby.

Some parents think that the infant can survive on breast milk alone in the first few months. Babies also need water and this should be checked before giving it to the child. A good way to do this will be to read the ingredients on the side of the product label.

When a colic baby is crying, parents will normally carry the child. This works but since motion comforts most infants. If the mother is having a hard time carrying the baby, another way to do this will be to go out of the house.

The woman can put the baby in a carriage or strap it to the car seat so both mother and child can spend quality time in the park or for a joyride.

Babies at a young age also get stressed out. Giving the infant a massage, a warm bath or using aromatherapy can help comfort the infant. The individual can also use a hot bag and put this on the belly and making sure that the water is not too hot.

Babies are colic because of the new environment. No one can blame the infant especially when the home has been the mother?s womb for the first nine months. In order for the baby to slowly adjust, parents can try swaddling or holding the infant close to the chest. This will make the baby reminisce how it was like before.

The various natural remedies are effective. This may not work all the time so the parents should try something different or a variation when things have not improved.

There are of course medications available that can treat colic babies. Parents should consult with the doctor first which one will do the trick before administering it to the infant.

Parents should not panic if the child is classified as colic. This is because it is not a disorder and this is a good indication that the baby is normal. Both the mother and father should be ready for some hard days ahead since there will be a lot of sleepless nights making one feel very exhausted.

Breastfeeding is perfect for mom and baby

Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful thing that allows a mother to provide her new born baby or babies with everything that is needed for a healthy start to life. Not only does breastfeeding provide babies with the nutritional necessities of life, breastfeeding provides mothers and babies with a chance to bond and establish a loving relationship.

Breastfeeding also provides a baby with all the necessary antibodies to fight of many types of infections and other illnesses in infancy and early childhood.

Breastfeeding is an easy way to give your baby the healthy start that he or she deserves. Following are some simple instructions to teach you how to properly feed your baby.

First, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and your lap flat. If you wish, you can position a pillow on your lap to support your baby during breastfeeding.

Now to position your baby properly during breastfeeding, turn your baby?s body toward your stomach. In this position, your baby?s bottom should be resting on your elbow and your baby?s head, neck and shoulders should be supported by your forearm and hand.

To begin breastfeeding, position your baby?s nose directly in front of your nipple. Allow your baby?s head to tip back gently and slightly. Then gently rub your baby?s lips against your nipple until his or her mouth opens very wide.

At this point during breastfeeding you should quickly bring your baby?s bottom lip and chin against your breast. In this position, your baby can breathe easily. You should be able to feel the baby?s mouth on a large portion of your breast.

You may need to support your breast to make your baby more comfortable during breastfeeding. It is also important that you are comfortable. You should be relaxed and you should be able to hear your baby swallowing softly.

If it doesn?t feel right, you should stop and start over.

Your baby will love to breastfeed, but will stop when he or she has had enough. If you are having difficulty breastfeeding your baby, just relax and ask someone for help. It is not always an easy process and some mothers or babies don?t take to breastfeeding right away. It may take some time to get used to it.

Keep in mind that it can more difficult to breastfeed a baby if you keep switching between formula and breast milk. Breastfeeding is the best way to give your baby all the nutrients and protection he or she needs, but you will need to take care of your body by eating a healthy and balanced diet.

To learn more about breastfeeding, look for a support group in your area, or contact your midwife, health visitor or general practitioner.

Saw palmetto dose for women

Saw palmetto have been popularly recognized in Europe, Japan, and recently the U.S. as a “man’s herb” because of its effectiveness in the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this condition, the prostates are enlarged due to the compound dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that signals the prostate cells to multiply. Men above 50 years are more susceptible to acquiring this condition (about 50-60%PRCTG% of men), which is often caused by a reduction in testosterone level that occurs with age.

The active constituents of saw palmetto is in its berries, which contain essential oils like lauric acid, palmitic acid, myristic acid, oleic acid, polysaccharides, and plant sterols. Saw palmetto grows in the southeastern region of the U.S., most abundantly in Florida and Mississippi. The berries of saw palmetto were for centuries used by American-Indians as a staple until they discovered its medicinal uses.

Saw palmetto holds a long tradition of being a diuretic and improving urinary flow, as well as shrinking a prostate’s size. Whilst its been known as a man’s herb, women have also resorted to saw palmetto supplements to enhance breast size. Unfortunately, this claim has yet to be substantiated by research. Available data from research only conclude the herb’s properties in alleviating BPH symptoms.

The daily dose used in studies is 160-320mg. It’s not stated whether this is the saw palmetto dose for women, however, it’s not contraindicated as well. Saw palmetto dose for women who are pregnant or are breastfeeding have not been established yet, but since this herb is considered a drug by alternative medicine, it’s safe to seek a physician’s advice prior to taking saw palmetto supplements.

Most drugs and supplements pass through the umbilical cord and the mammary gland, and whereas studies have not yet concluded its effects on the unborn child and breastfed infants, it’s safer to talk with your doctor before taking saw palmetto supplements. Moreover, saw palmetto supplements are unregulated in the U.S. and are not yet recognized by the FDA.

Regardless of the saw palmetto dose for women, saw palmetto supplements are contraindicated to people with bleeding disorders or are taking blood thinners (like warfarin). In general, saw palmetto dose for women should not exceed the recommended daily dose as stated on the product label. The supplements also do not promise therapeutic indications in women. Instead, the product instigates antiestrogenic activity, which makes it unsuitable during pregnancy.

Tips for Getting Pregnant While Breastfeeding

Many people have a clear cut idea on how much time they want to have between their children. Some are eager to have their family completed in a relatively short period of time, while others feel it is better to have some space and distance in developmental stages. There is no right or wrong way to plan a family, however those women who are interested in getting pregnant while breastfeeding will probably find it useful to be aware of some of the challenges involved with pregnancy while lactating.

It is far easier to get pregnant while breastfeeding after the baby is six months old. Many breastfeeding moms don?t ovulate or have periods for quite some time when the infant is very young. Obviously without these functions happening, getting pregnant while breastfeeding is improbable. Each breastfeeding woman is different and some resume their periods as early as three months after delivery and others can wait up to a year.

Let?s look at some numbers to get a clearer grasp of the difficulties involved in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. When a woman breastfeeds her body produces high levels of the hormone prolactin. This hormone is responsible for suppressing ovulation. The suppressed ovulation reduces the chance of pregnancy to one or two percent. Considering a non-lactating woman only has a twenty percent chance to begin with, the challenge here is obvious. When the baby is a little older, around the six-month age, fertility comes in with a 6%PRCTG% pregnancy chance.

There are some things you can try to aid in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. These are geared toward older babies and toddlers. Very young infants rely solely on breast milk for nutrition and it should not be limited in any way. If the baby is of an appropriate age, it may be advantageous to introduce more solid foods into the baby?s diet to supplement your mild supply. In this way the levels of prolactin will decrease along with the breast milk supply potentially increasing the odds of pregnancy. Timing could be everything in this situation and stretching out the time in between feedings during the day and night may be helpful.

Once menstruation begins again, regularly charting your ovulation cycle may assist in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. There are charts, kits, and calendars all designed to help designate the correct days for conception. Understand though that ovulation can be unpredictable especially for a breastfeeding mom.

Creating your family, as you and your partner want it to be is important, but be patient during the process of getting pregnant while breastfeeding. All good things come in time.

If you are looking to improve your body shape after having a baby then consider purchasing some post pregnancy exercise videos. These videos are specifically designed to help you lose weight and retone your body back to your pre-pregnancy shape. Most videos are recommended by gynecologists and midwives, and presented by trained fitness instructors. It can be hard to find time and energy after having a little one, which is why post pregnancy exercise videos are ideal. You can choose how long and how much you want to do in the comfort of your own home. You may also be feeling self conscious about your image and worried about leaving your little one if you went to exercise classes.

If you have a busy lifestyle and are unable to attend exercises then buying a post pregnancy exercise video is advantageous. Postnatal exercise will help you bond with your baby and ease any emotional highs and lows that you may be experiencing. Your energy levels will increase dramatically, giving you more energy to cope with the highs and lows of motherhood. Following post pregnancy exercise videos will help ease back and shoulder pain caused by delivery, particularly if you have had a traumatic birth and/or a caesarian section. You will regain and improve your pre-pregnancy physique thus building up strength to carry your new bundle of joy.

There are a variety of post pregnancy exercise videos to choose from such as yoga and Pilates. Some of these videos explain how to try pelvic floor exercises, which are very important to avoid incontinence and prolapses that are all too common after childbirth. There are even post pregnancy exercise videos that are designed so you can workout with your newborn. If you have a large family then trying yoga may be for you. It will help you relax after a busy day and help you feel better in yourself.

After purchasing a post pregnancy exercise video, there are a few things to consider if you want the videos to be affective towards our goal. Set yourself a regular set time when you are going to exercise, choose a time when you know your newborn will be asleep or you have your husband home to look after baby. Wear a comfortable bra, elasticated clothes and trainers. Drink plenty of water particularly if you are breastfeeding and don’t overdo things. Start with simple exercises and remember that your body is still recovering from the birth. Even if you can only manage ten minutes a day, you are still getting regular exercise, which is beneficial to your health and well being.

?Plugging the Leak – Why Some Women Have Bladder Control Issues after Menopause

After your body stops having periods, it stops making the female hormone estrogen. Estrogen is responsible for how your body matures and develops. In addition, it affects your monthly menstruation cycle, and changes to your body during pregnancy and breastfeeding after pregnancy. Estrogen may also keep the lining of the bladder and urethra thick and healthy. Therefore, a lack of estrogen may weaken the muscles need to control bladder functions.

If urinary muscles are in a weakened state, it will be easy for urine to leak out when you cough, sneeze or lift heavy objects. This type of leakage is called stress incontinence and is one of the most common bladder control problems in women going through menopause.

Other types of bladder control problems that are common in older women are caused by infections or nerve damage from diabetes or strokes. Heart problems and medications that are being taken as a result may contribute to bladder control problems in women going through h menopause. A difficulty in walking or moving, or an over all feeling of depression may also play a role in urinary disorders.

Another common bladder control problem in women going through menopause is urgency incontinence. This is caused by the bladder muscles squeezing at inappropriate times, often resulting in leakage.

If you experience bladder control problems after menopause, it is important to consult your doctor to rule out any other serious medical problems.

Doctors may recommend a number of ways to treat urinary control problems. First, they can make dietary changes to minimize incontinence. This means avoiding bladder irritants such as alcohol and caffeine. It is also helpful to limit your overall intake of fluids to less than 2 quarts daily.

Another treatment involves behavioral changes. These include bladder training, which attempts to increase the time interval between urinating. Or time voiding which sets urination on a schedule, this treatment works well for people with disabilities that may prevent them from getting to the bathroom on time. Absorbent devices such as disposable diapers or underwear shields are often required to manage incontinence.

If behavioral treatment is ineffective, the patient may need to be given medication to control the incontinence. Mechanical aids such as catheters my also be used to control bladder control problems that appear after menopause. These are hollow tubes inserted through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine. Urethral inserts are tubes that are inserted into the urethra to block urine leakage.

In extreme cases and when all other treatment options have failed, surgery may be required to correct bladder control problems. The surgery may reposition a bladder that has dropped.

No matter which treatment method is decided on, it is important to seek out medical help. Urinary incontinence can be a sign of a more serious health problem such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. Also if left untreated urinary incontinence may cause you to limit your physical or social activities. This withdrawal may lead to feelings of isolation and depression.

When seeking help you can turn to your family doctor or nurse. You can visit an urologist who specializes in urinary disorders. You can seek out your gynecologist who specializes in problems with the female system. Or you may need to visit a urogynecologists who specializes in women’s bladder or urine problems. If none of these physicians can help you might try a continence nurse who will visit you at home and often can teach you pelvic muscle exercise programs.

If after consulting a physician you would like to talk about your problem with others going through the same thing you may try joining a support group or call a toll free support number, There are also a variety of pamphlets and videos available to provide you with answers to some of your questions.

Bottle Warmer

When my daughter was an infant I had very little sleep. This often happens to parents of infants, though there are a small number that are blessed with a sleeping and calm baby. I was not one of those lucky ones. Most of that time is a blur, and I have vague memories of buying and using a bottle warmer to heat up her formula in the nighttime hours. I could not breastfeed, so we had to use formula. It was more of a pain than breastfeeding might have been, but I didn?t have much choice in the matter. So formula, and all that comes with it, was what we had to use.

I got the bottle warmer for very little money, but it worked for well. It didn?t last very long, but it lasted long enough for me to come out of my haze. Things were tough then as we were dealing with a family death at the same time. I have memories of getting up and using the bottle warmer, but most of them are not clear memories. That is why I am glad that I had one that was simple to use and worked like a dream without much input from me.

You have to be careful with a bottle warmer as some can make the formula (or breast milk) too hot. If you are tired enough, you may not think to check. Though you can warm bottles in the microwave you should never do it. Microwaves tend to warm the bottles unevenly, leaving scalding pockets of formula in the bottle. It might feel ok to your hand when you take it out, but you could easily burn your baby?s mouth. A bottle warmer is by far the better choice as long as you buy the right ones.

The bottle warmer that I bought used steam to warm the bottle. It worked rather fast, and I knew it would work right. I did have to make sure that I kept the bottom of it full of water however, or it simply would not work. There was nothing worse than setting the bottle in the bottle warmer for the required time only to find that the formula was still cold. If you get one that you like, you might want to buy two of them. Though mine was good, it stopped working and I didn?t have a replacement.

Breastfeeding Questions & Answers

Q. How often should a newborn be nursed?

A. You should nurse a newborn no less than 8 times a day, depending upon how long he sleeps between feedings at night. If he can go four hours between feedings, then you will probably feed him twice between 11pm and 7am. If you feed him right before he goes to bed, then you may only have to get up one time during the night.

Q. How often should an older baby be nursed?

A. Depending upon the age of your child, you should be feeding him every 3-4 hours during the day. As your child gets older, they will nurse less, but they will be eating more during each nursing. If you are going to nurse after your child is over 6 months old, you should not nurse less than 5 times a day. If your milk supply is decreasing, then you may need to add a nursing or two to your day to help increase your milk supply.

Q. How do I go about dropping a feeding as my baby gets older?

A. The most common change that moms need to make is going from a every 3 hour to every 4 hour routine, dropping a feeding in the middle of the night, or dropping a late-night feeding.

Most of the time you will know when your baby is ready to change their eating habits by a change in their sleep patterns. A baby that has been on an every 3 hour routine normally takes 3 naps a day and if they eat every 3,5 to 4 hours then they may drop the last nap of the nap or shorten one of the other naps considerably. Babies are usually ready to do this at around 3 months of age.

Most babies drop the feeding in the middle of night by themselves at around 6-14 weeks old. You will know that they are ready when you awake in a panic in the morning wondering why your baby did not get you for a feeding. The baby will require more food during the day though, and if you are breastfeeding, your breasts may feel full for a few days, but it is well worth it!

The late night feeding is usually the hardest to let go of. Some parents think that if they do not feed the baby right before bed that the baby will awake in the middle of the night. If you don?t think your child can do without the late night feeding, then push it back in 15-minute increments until you are feeding him at the time you would like to. If the last two feedings of the day seem too close together, don?t worry. It will all work itself out and you both will be much happier for it!

Remedy for Colic

Research shows that more than 20%PRCTG% of babies will develop Colic. This is not a disease or a disorder but parents will have to deal with the endless hours of crying until the newborn is four months of age.

Is there really a permanent solution for Colic? The answer is no. The best thing that a parent can do is remedy the situation until this will gradually go away as the infant gets older.

Here are some of those remedies.

1. Infants are used to having something in the mouth due to breastfeeding. Since the mother?s breasts cannot be there every time, using a pacifier can help the baby stay calm thus preventing excessive crying.

2. Watching the baby cry does not do anything. The parent must remedy the colic baby by taking it out of the crib and swaying it from side to side. Sometimes the sense of touch can do wonders making the infant know that he or she is safe. It will also be a good idea to sin g a lullaby that has been known to help the child drift again to sleep.

3. Another way to remedy a colic child will be to use a CD that plays light music. Studies have shown this works similar to how the mother sings a lullaby to the child.

4. The baby will get heavier as it gets older. Instead of carrying it in the arms, another remedy will by putting the infant in the carriage and going for a stroll. Some parents have taken the child for a ride in the car, which also helps calm the newborn.

5. Giving the baby a warm bath can also help. Since this can?t be done every time, the parent can put a warm bag on the belly or try massaging lotion instead. It will be a good idea to cover the pack with a towel since the temperature could be too much for the infant.

6. The type of food being eaten by the mother may also cause the child to be colic. Consulting with a dietitian help prevent this from happening as foods that produce gas are replaced with healthier ones.

If the situation does not change, this is the time that medication such as Simethicone drops should be used.

7. Some mothers stop breastfeeding after the 2nd month and change this with cow milk formula. Some babies are colic because of the formula so one way to remedy it will be to change this with a soy based formula.

8. Air is the root cause of some children being colic especially when the infant is now drinking from a bottle. The parent should check the hole of the nipple since a big hole makes the baby drink more than usual. If this happens, it will be a good idea to buy a new set of nipples.

A colic baby believe it or not is a healthy one. This is because the behavior it shows makes people aware of its existence and needs.

There will be times that the parents will get up late at night or early in the morning to address this but this can be remedied. Before one knows it, the excessive crying will not happen anymore as the infant has adjusted to the new environment.
