?Birthday Cake Barbie – An Easy Guide to Making your Own

Do you have a little Barbie aficionado in your family? Is her birthday coming up? If so, you may be tempted to try your hand at a Birthday Cake Barbie! You might have seen these made for other children, or maybe you have even glanced at a recipe in a magazine once or twice. You may actually even have seen pictures on several Barbie collector sites, as these cakes were quite the rage for a while. If you are ready to try your hand at this delectable piece of décor, here is an easy guide to making your own.

The first recipe is very easy to make and takes a minimum of ingredients:

Buy a cake mix of your choice. Make sure you like the color, since this cake will act as the skirt of the Barbie.

Bake the cake according to the recipe on the box in a round, tall baking dish. This is very important!

Once the cake is cool, you can take a Barbie doll of your choosing and take off her clothes. Some cooks will prefer to wrap her lower extremities in saran wrap before proceeding.

Remove the cake from its dish.

Now stick the Barbie into the middle of the cake. To ensure that the hole is not too big, just let the legs do the poking – if you will – and thus you will have the exact hole that you need. Do it very slowly, so that the cake does not split.

Next comes the frosting. This step will permit you to fashion a dress for Barbie! Let your imagination run wild! Use whatever colors you desire, and add your own personal decorative touches. Once the skirt is completely covered, also cover the doll’s torso to create the appearance of a bodice.

Be sure to put the cake into the refrigerator to allow the frosting to firm up a bit.

Variations of the recipe:

If you want to have a taller cake, then you may wish to bake an additional flat cake or two. Once these cakes have been baked, cooled down, and removed from their baking dishes, you can stack them one on top of the other. This will make for a much taller cake, and thus a more sophisticated looking skirt.

Instead of using frosting, you may have access to some fondant, which is the sugar coating that professional bakers like to use for their cakes to give them the smooth looks that are so popular. Fondant may be colored with a paintbrush and food coloring or even with a spray on gun – for those hobby bakers who might have more toys in their kitchen drawers. Add some edible pearls and flowers for a truly sophisticated outfit!

Another variation involves a regular sized sheet cake. Bake it according to the instructions and then decorate the top of the cake with a Barbie play set, such as a pool, and various other accessories.

As you can see, the variations on this general theme are endless, and no matter what your skill level is when it comes to baking, you will be able to create a beautiful cake that will be the talk of the party. Just keep in mind a few important don’ts:

Do not insert the doll into a hot cake. While it may be easier to break through the cake with the legs, it may cause the doll’s legs to melt, rendering the cake inedible, and the doll useless.

Do not leave any clothes on the doll; after all the dress is made with the cake and frosting or fondant. Additionally, if the fibers get into the cake, or if little pieces like palettes come off, they may present a choking hazard.

Do not use a regular paintbrush to paint on the food coloring. Purchase a high-end brush from an art supply or cooking store. Failure to heed this little bit of advice may result in your spending countless hours picking hairs from your inferior brush out of the frosting.

So go ahead and give it a try! The Barbie lover in your life will thank you and the cake makes for an astonishing center piece for any gift table.
